JOHN M. THOMPSON CHAIR IN INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND INNOVATION

Western University is pleased to announce a new John M. Thompson Chair in Information Technology and Innovation. This endowed position is funded by a generous donation from John M. Thompson, former Chancellor of Western University and past Vice-Chair of IBM. The establishment of this Chair provides an opportunity for the creation of technology-based innovation and entrepreneurial opportunities and collaboration between industry partners, faculty and students.

Applications are invited from exceptional candidates for the endowed Chair in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, effective September 1, 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful applicant will receive a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor. The rank will be commensurate with the successful applicant’s qualifications and experience. The successful incumbent will also receive a cross appointment with The Richard Ivey School of Business and will also join Western Engineering’s Thompson Centre of Engineering Leadership & Innovation. The initial appointment for the Chair will be a five-year term.

For a tenured appointment, successful candidates will have completed a PhD degree in the appropriate Engineering field, provide evidence of excellence in research and impact through publications in the highest quality journals, and have an established internationally-recognized, externally-funded research program, with evidence of interdisciplinary collaborations in research relevant to machine learning or data analytics with applications in business or entrepreneurship. Candidates must have the ability to secure Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) grants. Applicants with interests in data analytics, machine learning or Internet of Things are particularly interesting. Candidates whose research has business applications are preferred. The Chair holder will be expected to articulate a vision for continued research leadership in this area. An exceptional profile with respect to teaching and training of students at the undergraduate and graduate levels in machine learning and/or data analytics is also required.

The successful candidate will develop and teach courses in technically-oriented topics to business students at The Richard Ivey School of Business. Applicants will be expected to articulate a vision to enhance links between the Faculty of Engineering, The Richard Ivey School of Business and the broader engineering entrepreneurship community. It is anticipated that the Chair’s time will be allocated more strongly to research than that of a typical faculty member and an alternative workload arrangement will be in place.
