Job Details

Do you have experience helping students succeed in quantitative reasoning courses including general education courses and courses that prepare students for calculus? Consider joining our interdisciplinary team of mathematics education researchers and practitioners, and leading the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s initiative to improve learning and success rates in Quantitative Reasoning classes.

The Director of Quantitative Reasoning is a new and innovative position housed within the Department of Mathematics that, to some degree, the candidate will help define. Directorship duties range from supporting/mentoring faculty instruction, leading a faculty team dedicated to improvement of instruction, evaluating effectiveness of initiatives, conducting and publishing research related to initiatives, pursuing external funding in relation to these goals, and coordinating instruction and professional development in conjunction with ongoing university-wide improvement efforts.  The directorship comes with a substantial teaching reduction. The faculty appointment can be at any level, including instructor or lecturer in a renewable term appointment, tenure-track assistant professor, or tenured associate or full professor. A Master’s degree in mathematics, education, or closely related field is required for this position, but a doctorate is strongly preferred (and required for a tenure-track or tenured position). Salary is highly competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be supplemented with an annual director stipend.

Mathematics is one of the largest departments at UNO, both in number of faculty and in diversity of mission.  We offer a wide range of concentrations and a rich array of student opportunities in and out of the classroom. We seek a candidate who can bring best practices of student success to our quantitative reasoning classes, within the context of the university’s mission and values.  UNO serves a diverse student body with many first-generation college students.  The Math faculty have a strong commitment to diversity in its varied forms and to fostering an inclusive and welcoming learning environment where students, faculty and staff thrive and succeed.

UNO is a vibrant, metropolitan university in the state’s largest city, with an enrollment of approximately 15,000 students. UNO has the distinction of being one of the nation’s leaders in engagement and outreach with a 2015 Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation. Omaha is known for its excellent public-school system and strong economic base. UNO lies in the heart of the city and has strong ties to the business, government, and non-profit communities. As both a Metropolitan University of distinction and a Carnegie Doctoral Research institution, UNO transforms and improves the quality of life locally, nationally, and globally.

The start date for the position is negotiable.  Review of applications will begin August 15, 2020 and will continue until the position is filled. Applicants must apply through the PeopleAdmin portal at https://unomaha.peopleadmin.com/postings/10676.   Application materials include a letter of interest, a current CV, and a teaching statement that includes information on working with and supporting first generation learners and at-risk students.  Interested candidates are encouraged to reach out to the search committee chair, Michael Matthews michaelmatthews@unomaha.edu for a pre-application discussion.
